Pyay

It is one of the ancient capitals of the Pyu people from AD300 –1000. In history it was called Sri Ksetra but now as Pyay. It is 180 miles from Yangon and easily accessible by tain or car. The present number of archaeological finds and artifacts are quite enough to stand witness to the prime of Sri Ksetra. From the ruins of the city wall of Ksetra (Pyay), we could assume that the city must have been of an oval shape instead of a square. Visit the museum and see the original prototype stupas such as Baw Baw Gyi Pagoda and Be Be Pagoda before the present stupas assume their shapes later. There are many Pyu artifacts inside a small Museum at Hmawza village. Take an ox cart to visit a nearby village and see the ordinary people in their daily chores.

The next tourist site near Pyay is Akauk Taung. Drive to Akauk Taung crossing the bridge over the Ayeyarwady River and get to Hton bo village. Then take a boat down the river to see rows of Buddha statues curved on the rock face of a cliff. These niches with Buddha statues are said to be from the late 15th century.
