Kyaingtong

Kyaingtong is one of the interesting cities for people who wish to see the colorful Myanmar hill tribe people. Kyaing tong is a major commercial town of the area and also situated in a remote hilly region and close to the borders with Thailand and China. Hence the inhabitants living around the city vary from highlanders to city people. One can visit people like “Eng” who are mostly animists, Akhar, Akhu, Silver Palaung, Red Palaung, Gon Shan, Lahu and Khun people who has their own spoken languages similar to northern Thai. There is hot springs around Kyaingtong as well as beautiful waterfalls.

Another interesting place is Wan Nyat monastery, a couple of hours driving to the east of Kyaingtong. The monastery is typical of the Shan and Thai architecture.

Loimwe is off the Kyaingtong to Tachilek Highway to the east of Kyaingtong. During the British colonial days it was the seat of the British District Commissioner. The bungalow that was the residence of the District Commissioner can still be seen among the tall pine trees. It resembles a typical cottage in the English countryside complete with its own fireplace. Loimwe is higher in comparison to Kyaingtong and the temperature is also much lower. The road is quite steep but it is possible to walk up to Loimwe and see the Kyaingtong Valley below.

Mongla is right on the border with Xishaungbanna in China but on the Myanmar side. It was a sleepy border town separated from China by a small stream just a decade ago but now it has grown into a busy commercial town. Modern hotels and other tourist entertainment establishments had been built and a lot of Chinese day-trippers visit Mongla everyday. Mongla is approximately 3 hours drive by car from Kyaingtong.
