Kyaiktiyo (The Golden Rock) & beyond

The small town “Kyaikhto” lies about 60 miles south east of Bago. The small town is famous for “Kyaiktiyo Pagoda” (The Golden Rock).A pagoda is built on top of a gilded boulder atop a cliff which giving an impression that it is about to topple into the valley below.

The boulder on which the pagoda stands is believed to contain a hair relic of Lord Buddha. This is a kind of an adventure trip as you take a small truck from Kinpun camp to Rethetaung bus terminal together with the local pilgrims and walk another one hour up hill to the Kyaiktiyo Pagoda platform. The sunset view from the mountain top is amazing.

Hpa-an

Continue by road from Kyaikhto to Thaton (the old Mon capital) and then to Hpa-an, the capital of Kayin state. Hpa-an is famous for its Zwegabin mountain and the most interesting part is to study the different culture and traditions of people living around the mountain , the Kawgun cave decorated with numerous terracotta tablets of Buddha images on the wall are believed to be from Thaton period. Visit the Kyaik-Kalat, a small shrine on a limestone rock and the local Hpa-an market should also not be missed.

Mawlamyaine (Moulmein)

The city of Moulmein (Mawlamyaine) is situated to the south of Hpa-an between the Kyaikthalan Range and Thanlwin River. From Hpa-an it is only an hour by a car or three hours by boat cruising down Thanlwin River. Mawlamyaine traces its history back to antiquity but gained prominence only after the British had conquered Lower Myanmar and made it into a busy seaport exporting rice and teak wood to Europe.

Take a boat to Bilukyun to see the local cottage industries produce a variety of household items or drive to Kado-Kawhnat villages and the Hpa-auk meditation center. Mudon is also not far. Here local weavers produce the famous Mudon textiles still using the age old looms.
