Staple foods for Myanmar being rice, almost all kinds of Myanmar food are based on rice.

The presence of 4 major rivers namely Ayeyarwaddy , Chindwin, Sitaung and Thanlwin flow from North or South of Myanmar. The rivers and the sea, by nature give us many kinds of fishes and sea related products.

Moreover, rice is grown in all part of the country and the nature of soil produce different kind of rice and Ayeyarwaddy Delta was once known as the rice bowl of Asia.

Geologically, the country of Myanmar is situated between Bay of Bengal and India in the West and China, Laos and Thailand in the East.

According to it’s situation, some food in Myanmar are similar to that of India and some are similar to Chinese food. Though you may see some influence, Myanmar Cuisine has it’s own identity.

Basic Myanmar cuisine use curry, garlic, onion, herbs mixed with poultry, fowl or fish.

Normal dish at home will have one main curry dish (either poultry, fowl or fish), soup of vegetable or vermicelli or peas, one side dish of salad or fried vegetable.

Most houses will have a bowl of Ngapi Yae kyo; a thick dip made from fish paste, eat with different kinds of vegetables, boiled or raw. This savory dish makes mouth watering for most Myanmar people.




What does Myanmar people eat for breakfast!


Mohinga

It is a bowl of rice noodles with fish soup. The soup is made from curry, onion, garlic, bean powder, ginger, lemon grass, sliced tender core of banana-stem, fish sauce and fish stock. It has other crispy garnishes like fried gourd-fritters, fried fish cake, boiled egg, fried pea, fried onion, etc. To complete the tasty dish need to add some coriander leave.

Mohniga is sold every morning at market, tea shop and famous Mohinga shops.

Fried rice with boiled pea

Many people likes to fill up their stomach with fried rice and boiled pea in the morning. The boiled pea can easily buy from vendors who put a basket of Boiled pea on her head sold early morning walking from street to street.

Ohn-no-khauk-swe

Yellow noodle soup in mainly made of chicken and coconut soup.This dish is also one of the favorite for Myanmar people. The soup is made from chunks of chicken meat, curry, onion, garlic, fish sauce, coconut milk and chicken stock. The bowl of noodle soup is garnish with yellowish fried cracker.

Khauk-swe thod

Noodle mixed salad. A plate with bits of yellow noodle , rice noodle, vermicelli, fried bean curd, sliced cabbage and coriander leave, sliced boiled potato is mixed with special sauce such as tamarind juice, fried onion and oil, pounded fried shrimp, bean powder and fish sauce . It is one of the delicious meal, good to take with hot clear soup in early morning.

Other food like Kauk Hnin paung (steamed sticky rice), Bain Mont (a cake made of rice powder and jaggery liquid and poppy seeds) Mont sein baung (a cake made of rice power and jaggery liquid and coconut chips are eaten for breakfast.
